The Sinhala typing table

Every Sinhala letter has one fixed code, and nothing is guessed from the word you type. Consonants and special letters follow ITRANS, the documented plain-keyboard scheme for Indian-script languages. Vowels follow the usual Singlish habit. Where we differ from ITRANS is listed below the table.

Rules

  • Double a vowel for the long sound: aa, ii, uu, ee, oo. A lone e or o is the short vowel.
  • A consonant on its own is the bare letter (k = ක්); add a vowel for the full letter (ka = ක).
  • Capital letters are special letters: N ණ L ළ T ට D ඩ S ෂ M ං H ඃ Th ථ Dh ධ.
  • A capital that starts a word is read as the plain letter (Nimal, Thilini). Write a dot first (.N, .Sh) for the special one.
  • ^ joins: ng^ ඟ, nd^ ඳ, nD^ ඬ, nj^ ඦ, mb^ ඹ; k^ra ක්‍ර; k^ya ක්‍ය; r^ka ර්‍ක.
  • Consonants and special letters follow ITRANS, except that th and dh are the plain ත ද.

How this differs from ITRANS

  • A single e or o is the short vowel (ITRANS reads it as the long one). Use ee and oo for the long vowels.
  • th and dh are the plain ත and ද, because that is how Sri Lankan names are written (Thilini, Dilshan). ITRANS makes them the aspirated ථ and ධ, which here are Th and Dh.
  • The joined nasal letters and the conjunct joiners use ^, because ITRANS has no plain-keyboard code for them.
